Appearing on “Fox News Sunday”, Steele condemned Reid for calling then-presidential candidate Barack Obama “light-skinned” and “with no Negro dialect” in private conversations during the campaign. The remarks, Steele stressed, were just as contemptuous as those made by former Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who once praised Strom Thurmond’s segregationist presidential candidacy. And, as such, Reid (like Lott) should be forced to resign from his leadership post.

“I think he should,” said Steele. “There is a standard where Democrats think they can say these things and apologize when it comes from the mouth of their own. But if it comes from anyone else, it’s racism. It’s either racist or it’s not. And it’s inappropriate, absolutely. So if the standard is the one we saw with Trent Lott as leader at the time, then I think this absolutely falls in that category here. … Remember, this is the same leader who just a few weeks ago was talking about health care in the context of slavery. Clearly he is out of touch.”

The follow-up question to Steele’s statement was obvious from the onset. The RNC Chairman, this past week, had been chastised by members of both parties for using the phrase “Honest Injun” to tout the Republican party’s platform. Combined with other gaffes, was this too grounds for resignation?

“No, absolutely not,” he said. “Why should I Chris [Wallace]? I’m pushing the ball. I’m raising the money. I’m winning elections. I have got the base fired up.”

“If [the comment] is [offensive] I apologize for it,” he added. “I wasn’t intending to say a racial slur at all. The reality is that’s not the same as what we were talking about before.”

Steele, of course, has had more flare-ups this past week then just the “Honest Injun” remark. And Wallace pressed him to address several others, including news that he was doing a book tour with the knowledge of his own staff and predictions that the GOP wasn’t ready to win or govern the House of Representatives.

“There is too much focus on me because that’s what Washington wants to focus on,” Steele confessed. “I’m very passionate about what I do. I’m very passionate about winning. … So I bring that to the table. And yeah, I get a little bit hot headed.”

Yawn. I’m not terribly impressed with either one of these guys. For the record, though, Harry Reid has a habit of making offensive, off-the-cuff comments that demonstrate just what an insulated patrician s-c-h-m-u-c-k he really is. Remember his complaint about smelly tourists in DC?

What Reid said was that the US was ready for a light skinned black man who could speak well, meaning that if it was a dark skinned black man the US POPULACE would have had a harder time accepting him, not reid personally but the US in general.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D-13th), who hosted WVON’s Cliff Kelley Show, challenged the Republican Party to repudiate Lott’s remarks and to call for his resignation as senate leader.

“It seems to be that we can forgive a 100-year-old senator for some of the indiscretion of his youth, but, what is more difficult to forgive is the current president of the U.S. Senate (Lott) suggesting we had been better off if we had followed a segregationist path in this country after all of the battles and fights for civil rights and all the work that we still have to do,” said Obama.

President Barack Obama accepted Senator Harry Reid’s apology for calling him “light skinned” and “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one” in private conversations during the 2008 campaign.

Obama, in a statement, said he received a phone call from the Senate majority leader, and that while Reid’s comments were “unfortunate,” he accepted the apology “without question.”

“I’ve seen the passionate leadership he’s shown on issues of social justice and I know what’s in his heart,” Obama said yesterday. “As far as I am concerned, the book is closed.”

Reid, 70, also issued a statement calling the remarks “improper” and a “poor choice of words,” apologizing “for offending any and all Americans, especially African Americans.”

“I was a proud and enthusiastic supporter of Barack Obama during the campaign and have worked as hard as I can to advance President Obama’s legislative agenda,” Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said yesterday. “Throughout my career, from efforts to integrate the Las Vegas strip and the gaming industry to opposing radical judges and promoting diversity in the Senate, I have worked hard to advance issues important to the African American community.”

Reid’s remarks are included in excerpts of a new book called “Game Change” that were posted on The Atlantic’s website. The book, scheduled for publication Jan. 11, is by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. The excerpt says Reid’s support for Obama was “unequivocal” and that he “was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate.”

Reelection Race

Reid, first elected to the Senate in 1986, is facing a difficult reelection bid this year. A new poll commissioned by the Las Vegas Review Journal, gives Reid a 52 percent unfavorable rating and shows him losing to three potential Republican opponents. Reid said in a Jan. 8 statement he was “absolutely running for reelection.”

“Reid can’t afford any mistakes if he wants to get re- elected,” said Nathan Gonzales, political editor of the Rothenberg Political Report. “Reid wins by getting voters to focus on his opponent and stories like this don’t help.”

Reid is among the most imperiled of the Democratic Party’s incumbent senators, along with Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas and Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. Democratic senators Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, who were also in tough reelection battles, announced their retirements last week.

NTSB agents arrive to investigate ditched US Airways flight. News from NEW YORK — The pilot of a US Airways jet that splashed down Thursday in the Hudson River was hailed as a hero Friday, while National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived to begin their inquiry into the plane crash.

Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot, is being credited with guiding the plane into the near-freezing waters off Manhattan after it lost the use of both engines in what appears to have been a rare case of a “double bird strike,” according to media reports.

The Airbus A320 had 155 people on board, and all escaped serious injury. The jet had taken off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport bound for Charlotte, N.C., when it reported flying through a flock of birds at around 3 p.m. Eastern.

The five-person crew was able to get everyone out of the plane safely as the aircraft foundered in shallow waters. Ferries in the area responded quickly and carried most of the passengers to shore.

“The pilot did a masterful job of landing the plane in the river and then making sure that every body got out,” said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a press conference.

Agents from the NTSB were dispatched to inspect the aircraft, which was still in the river early Friday, anchored near a ferry terminal in lower Manhattan. From the street, only part of a wing of the partially submerged craft could be seen.

A spokesman for the agency said it wasn’t known when the aircraft might be pulled from the river.
On Friday, US Airways said the nearly 10-year-old plane had been leased from Wells Fargo Bank Northwest and had last been inspected on Dec. 6. The engines had been installed within the last three years.

Freezing waters

The sight of the plane splashing into the river on one of the coldest days this winter triggered a rescue effort in which a flotilla of ferries, water taxis and tourist boats raced to the stricken craft. Passengers who had scrambled out of the flooding plane were plucked to safety as the A320 drifted slowly toward the Statue of Liberty.

Television images taken immediately following the incident showed passengers and crew members standing on the wings in plain sight of thousands of onlookers gathered on the New York and New Jersey shorelines.

Passengers interviewed on TV described a harrowing series of events that unfolded in the moments after takeoff. They said they’d heard a loud bang and seen flames erupting from one of the engines. Soon afterward, an announcement from the cockpit instructed them to prepare for an impact.

“You could smell smoke and fire. … We knew something was going on,” a passenger told cable-news channel CNN. “Then the pilot told us to prepare for impact.”

“We were all able to get out. … It’s incredible right now that everyone is still alive,” the passenger said.

Another passenger, who said he had been sitting in a seat just behind a wing, said he saw smoke and flame from the engine.

U dont really know the cause for the crash, , they have to investigate and reach a conclusion, they jump the guns, how many times in the media have we seen wrong reasons given then a few months down the road the reason is changed when everyone forgets

That might be the angle the trial lawyers take! Were there any pets on board the plane? If so, the predatory lawyers will go to the pet owners and convince them to sue both Airbus (for not equipping the plane with special floatation devices and special escape hatches for animals) and the airlines for buying planes that don’t come with such devices.

So do you think he has done that before possibly on a simulator? These guys spend hours on simulators practicing emergency situations dont they? This is a very rare case but i would think that every pilot has some sort of emergency plan in mind. Great job by the pilot and im sure he didnt want to die either.

All engine out scenarios are practiced pretty rarely in the sim. Ditching is even more rare (I’ve never done it). I believe the problem here is lack of data – we can only simulate an event for which the dynamics are well understood, and ditching is not one of those. Water landings usually do not end well, but one thing that he had on his side is that he didn’t have to deal with rolling seas, which can easily cause an airplane to ball up – basically start to yaw, then catch and flip over, ripping off its wings, after which what happens in anyone’s guess, and is very sensitively dependent on the prevailing conditions.

This was Avian Terrorism plain and simple. We should take decisive action against all Geese, canadian and domestic. Those birds knew what they were doing. Let the war or birds begin!

Joe Biden made news earlier today — likely in a way that caused Democratic strategists to cringe — when he said that the wealthier Americans who would pay more under Barack Obama’s tax plan should feel “patriotic” about doing so.

At a union hall rally this afternoon in Akron, Ohio, Biden sought to make a virtue of his accessibilty — even if it results in the occasional gaffe.

The Times’ Faye Fiore is covering Biden and she relates that after he mentioned the tax question he had been asked on “Good Morning America,” he said, “I’ve done a lot of press, I’ve done, I don’t know, I was told I did 68, 70 press conferences.”

Then he recounted being asked by a reporter what he thought of Sarah Palin. “When she does three, I’ll let you know,” he quoted himself as saying.

That means the political world will have to wait for one more tete-a-tete between Palin and a journalist. Since John McCain picked her as his running mate, she’s done two sets of interviews — with ABC’s Charlie Gibson that aired last week and with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, which wraps up tonight (previews of what she has to say can be perused here and here).

Biden, as is his wont, warmed to his subject after his comment about Palin, saying: “I don’t know! I don’t have any idea! I don’t know! I don’t know!”

With his crowd rising to its feet, he broadened his riff to include McCain.

“You know, I mean, look, and it’s not, look guys, it’s not just Sarah Palin,” he said. “When’s the last time John, when’s the last time John’s had a press conference? I’m serious.”

McCain, once perhaps the most accessible of national politicians to reporters, has changed that policy as the presidential campaign has progressed. The Democratic National Committee, in turn, this week started a “McCain Press Watch,” which clocks …

… the time elapsed since the Republican last took reporter questions.

By the same token, lack of accessibility to the candidate has been an ongoing complaint among those covering Obama.

Biden, continuing a rare day in which figured prominently in the political back-and-forth, stood by his “patriotic” remark during an interview with Katie Couric of CBS.

Asked about the barbs directed at him over it by Palin and McCain, noted that the latter had opposed the sweeping tax cuts President Bush pushed into law in 2001 precisely because it benefited the wealthy (McCain famously has since retreated from that position).

“Give me a break,” Biden told Couric. “I remind my friend John McCain what he said. When Bush called for war and tax cuts he said, quote, ‘It is immoral, immoral to take a nation to war and not have anybody pay for it.’

“I am so sick and tired of this phoniness. The truth of the matter is that we are in trouble, and the people who do not need a new tax cut should be willing as patriotic Americans to understand the way to get this economy back up on their feet is to give middle-class taxpayers a break. We take the tax cut they’re getting and we give it to the middle class.”

John McCain is running arounf and telling audiences everything is fine and promising simple, quick, painless answers to all their problems.

Sen. Biden is leveling with the American people and telling us straight: the economy is in trouble and common sense tax increases on the wealthiest one percent are gonna be necessary.

I don’t know how McCain can seriously call himself a “maverick” when is taking the cowards way out and just making wild promises of quick-fixes instead of engaging in straight talk.

I think it’s pretty obvious who the real mavericks are: the ones telling us not what we wanna hear, but what we need to hear.
I’m no fan of Palin/McCain but I will say that there is a kind of “Palin Effect” running rampant. To be honest, I think we need more coverage of Biden. He just isn’t covered as much as she is; it’s a bit disturbing. I’m interested in hearing more about him. Palin’s turned into an overnight celebrity. I worry that Obama peaked too soon.
I agree that Joe Biden is definitely not getting enough attention.

What makes this speech powerful for me is that he talks so softly. This is one plain-speaking guy. It’s like he’s sitting in your living room having a conversation with you.

And he makes it clear that there are no easy answers (unlike Moose and Maverick).

I think (I hope) that Palin is like a Pet Rock. There is a burst of interest and then it just as quickly flames out.

I think the interest is going to swing back to old Joe and Obama because these guys are really saying something. I think what Biden said about wealthy Americans feeling pride in paying more taxes makes perfect sense. Give back to the country that gave so much to you. Nothing wrong with that.

I don’t think it was rude, it was an example of reaching out to the higher class and rationalizing a problem without any “class warfare” language or implications.

Biden is a smart and level-headed guy. I really do wish there was more of him in the media. Obama is taking on McCain, Palin and the entire Republican army of ignorance and greed alone. Get Biden in there, who wouldn’t want to have a beer with him?! I think I would like Biden if I could find out more about it him, but no media outlet is telling me anything (good or bad).

It’s a shame Biden doesn’t get more of the limelight seeing he’s made every effort to put himself in the public arena. Not to mention his speeches are substantive.

Meanwhile, Palin hides behind a team of spokespeople because McCain and Co. feels she is being treated unfairly. Treated unfairly?!?! If she can’t take it from the media, she is incapable of holding the vice-presidential seat.
No, Biden is right. People who try to make the arguement that raising taxes on the wealthies 1 percent will “hurt” the economy are incorrect and misinformed.

First of all there is a common sense tipping point. If we raises Microsoft’s taxes by 5 dollars…it has no effect on the economy. Hell, if we lowered Microsoft’s taxes by $1,000 it would have absolute ZERO impact on the economy. There is common sense room for both increases and decudtion that can occur that have no significant effect on the company whatsoever. So we can have targeted common sense tax increases to balance our books and still keep our companies strong and competitive.

Working with companies and finding common sense areas where we can raise taxes, close offshore tax shelters, close tax loopholes will generate critical revenue for our government.

The bad news is our economy is fucked (to use a technical term). We’ve got massive deficits, a crumbling infrastructure, two ultra-expensive land wars in the Middle East…..and to date we’ve been balancing the book by borrowing massive amount of money from China.

When John McCain looks you straight in the eye and says that he can bring the books back into balance and restore our economy without COMMON SENSE tax increases on the wealthies 1 percent of Americans and the wealthies 1 percent of corporations he is lying.

Flat out, bald faced Bush-level lying.

We’re in a tough spot and it’s going to take some tough, common sense measures to get us out.

For 8 years we’ve voted for the guys that have promised easy answers, quick fixes and weekly stimulus checks.

It was fantasy-land. Totally unsustainable fantasy-based economics. Much like the theory that housing prices would rise forever, winning Iraq would be cheap and pay for itself, or that putting Enron on the honor system would be just as effective as common sense government oversight and regulation.

Obama and Biden aren’t sugar coating it for us. It is not going to be easy and there will be some tough choices. The fantasy option of maintaining Bush’s massive tax breaks for the wealthiest 1 percent is not a viable option at this point and Obama and Biden are telling it to us straight.

Sen. McCain, however, is tapdancing as fast as he can and making wild, insane promises in a desperate attempt to win our votes.

That’s not a maverick. That’s a sad old man that’s desperate to win.
People are always ready to slant words to fit their point of view. As if rich people don’t have enough cash as is, they cringe at the thought of someone else receiving a bit through taxes.
Lets hope that they DO cover obama/biden more, all they need to do is put this stuff on tv. they’re both coated in teflon, where the mccain camp is sitting in a glass house and throwing stones.

The day Joe Biden officially launched his 2008 presidential run in February of 2007, he virtually ended it with a classic Biden gaffe — this one involving the man on whose ticket he’ll be a part of in the race for the White House. “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said, apparently oblivious to his implied slur of previous African-American politicians. Although Obama brushed aside the comment, other prominent African-Americans and much of the Washington political class came down hard on Biden. He apologized and Obama accepted, but Biden never gained traction, and dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, a year later.

Biden’s gaffe made him an unlikely running mate, and much will be made of the bridge-building that Obama’s choice represents. But in the end, Obama picked him for the simplest of reasons: The six-term Senator from Delaware is strongest in areas where the freshman from Illinois is weakest. Biden’s tenure in the Senate, his foreign policy expertise, his religion, and his suburban middle-class background, all fill gaps in Obama’s own presidential profile.

Most of all, where Obama is reserved and cautious in a political knife-fight, Biden comes out swinging. Tapping Biden is a signal that the Obama campaign is ready for a battle — and to take the risks that come with it.

Biden’s experience is his biggest asset. His 36 years in the Senate have earned him chairmanships of the Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees, positions he has used to establish himself as a familiar and respected, if partisan, spokesman for the Democrats on everything from Supreme Court appointments to complex national security issues during and after the Cold War. Obama’s lack of comparable experience has him trailing John McCain by as much as 15 points on some foreign policy issues; if a vice-presidential pick can offset voters’ concerns on those issues, Biden’s resume should help.

Obama also needs help with key voting blocks such as Catholics and white, blue-collar swing voters. Biden ranks with Ted Kennedy among the Senate’s best-known and longest-serving Catholics. Although he comes from a middle class family, his pro-union, moderate-to-liberal voting record and Irish-American family background give Biden popularity with working class and ethnic voters. Although Delaware has only three Electoral College votes, Biden’s background could help garner a few more next door: Biden lived in Pennsylvania until age 10, and a grandfather served as a State Senator there.

Biden’s personal story is solid and compelling. His father was a car salesman and his mother raised him, his two brothers and a sister. He went to school and practiced law in Delaware before running for local government and winning an upset Senate victory in 1972. While Christmas shopping a month later, his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident that also injured his two sons. Biden almost resigned, but was convinced by Senate leaders to take the position, and has commuted daily to Washington ever since.

Biden led the Judiciary committee through the contentious confirmation hearings for Judge Robert Bork, and spent much time locking horns with Jesse Helms on the Foreign Relations committee. His prescriptions for U.S. foreign policy have been sometimes controversial — he supports dividing Iraq into three autonomous regions, for example. But he is accepted as an expert and respected on both sides of the aisle.

Biden’s biggest edge in the homestretch may have come, paradoxically, from his greatest liability: his personality. Obama is charismatic, but in tough political confrontations he can be cautious and reserved. A running mate who can add passion to the coming battles, Biden has a fire-in-the-belly quality Obama lacks. That spunk first vaulted Biden to the Senate by a narrow margin in 1972 over an aging incumbent, and it also gave him an edge over the more sedate finalists for the ticket, Indiana’s Evan Bayh and Virginia’s Tim Kaine.

The history of Biden’s gaffes, however, show the risks of naming him to the ticket. He was forced out of the race for President in 1988 after Michael Dukakis’ campaign leaked evidence that Biden had plagiarized a speech from British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock, and in doing so had misrepresented his own class background. In June 2006, Biden offended Indian-Americans when he claimed a great relationship with them thanks to the fact that in Delaware, “You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” Six months later he made the infamous comment about Obama’s cleanliness.

It’s a measure of how badly the last month has gone for the once high-flying Obama campaign that they’re willing to risk taking on board a shoot-from-the-lip running mate like Biden. And in a race that is growing tighter with every poll, that risk could make a real difference — for better or for worse.

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee.”

In selecting Biden, Obama passed over several other potential running mates, none more prominent than former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, his tenacious rival in dozens of primaries and caucuses.

Obama’s campaign arranged a debut for the newly minted ticket on Saturday outside the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill.

Obama’s decision leaked to the media several hours before his aides planned to send a text message announcing the running mate, negating a promise that people who turned over their phone numbers would be the first to know who Obama had chosen. The campaign scrambled to send the text message after the leak, sending phones buzzing at the inconvenient time of just after 3 a.m. on the East coast.

Hundreds of miles to the west, carpenters, electricians, sound stage gurus and others transformed the Pepsi Center in Denver into a made-for-television convention venue.

Tucked away in one corner were thousands of lightweight rolled cardboard tubes, ready-made handles for signs bearing the names of the Democratic ticket — once the identity of Obama’s running mate was known.

While Obama decided against adding Clinton to his ticket, he has gone to great lengths to gain the confidence of her primary voters, agreeing to allow her name to be placed in nomination at the convention and permitting a roll call vote that threatens to expose lingering divisions within the party.

Biden slowly emerged as Obama’s choice across a long day and night of political suspense as other contenders gradually fell away.

First Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine let it be known that he had been ruled out. Then came word that Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana had also been passed over.

Several aides to Clinton said the Obama campaign had never requested financial or other records from her.

Other finalists in the veep sweepstakes were Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Texas Rep. Chet Edwards.

Among those on the short list, Biden brought the most experience in defense or foreign policy — areas in which Obama fares relatively poorly in the polls compared with Republican Sen. John McCain.

While the war in Iraq has been supplanted as the campaign’s top issues by the economy in recent months, the recent Russian invasion of Georgia has returned foreign policy to the forefront.

In addition to foreign policy experience, Biden, a native of Scranton, Pa., has working-class roots that could benefit Obama, who lost the blue-collar vote to Clinton during their competition for the presidential nomination.

Biden was elected to the Senate at the age of 29 in 1972, but personal tragedy struck before he could take office. His wife and their 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed when a tractor-trailer broad-sided her station wagon.

Biden took his oath of office for his first term at the hospital bedside of one of his sons.

On Friday, he spent the day at his home in Delaware with friends and family. The normally loquacious lawmaker maintained a low profile as associates said they believed — but did not know — he would be tapped. They added they had been asked to stand by in case their help was needed.

No sooner had word spread of his selection than McCain’s campaign unleashed its first attack. Spokesman Ben Porritt said in a statement that Biden had “denounced Barack Obama’s poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing — that Barack Obama is not ready to be president.”

As evidence, Republicans cited an ABC interview from August 2007, in which Biden said he would stand by an earlier statement that Obama was not ready to serve as president.

Biden is seeking a new Senate term in the fall. there was no immediate word whether he intended to change plans as he reaches for national office.

Michael Silberman, a partner at online communications firm EchoDitto, said the campaign gambled when they made such a high-stakes promise and find themselves in a precarious situation where they could risk a great deal of trust with supporters.

“For Obama supporters, this is like finding out from your neighbor instead of your sister that she’s engaged — not how you want or expect the news to be delivered,” Silberman said.

Biden dropped out of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination after a poor finish in the Iowa caucuses, but not before he talked dismissively of joining someone else’s ticket.

“I am not running for vice president,” he said in a Fox interview. “I would not accept it if anyone offered it to me. The fact of the matter is I’d rather stay as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee than be vice president.”

He had stumbled on his first day in the race, apologizing for having described Obama as “clean.” Months later, Obama spoke up on Biden’s defense, praising him during a campaign debate for having worked for racial equality.

It was Biden’s second try for the White House. The first ended badly in 1988 when he was caught lifting lines from a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

In the decades since, he become a power in the Senate, presiding over confirmation proceedings for Supreme Court nominees as well as convening hearings to criticize President Bush’s handling of the Iraq War.

Biden voted to authorize the war, but long ago became one of the Senate’s surest critics of the conflict. Ironically, perhaps, his son, Beau, attorney general of Delaware, is due to spend a tour of duty in Iraq beginning this fall with his National Guard unit.

Obama worked to keep his choice secret, although he addressed the issue broadly during the day in an interview.

“Obviously, the most important question is: Is this person ready to be president?” Obama told “The Early Show” on CBS. Second, he said, was: “Can this person help me govern? Are they going to be an effective partner in creating the kind of economic opportunity here at home and guiding us through some dangerous waters internationally?”

And, he added: “I want somebody who is going to be able to challenge my thinking and not simply be a yes person when it comes to policymaking.

RALEIGH, N.C. – For nearly a decade, Andrew Young was John Edwards’ loyal foot soldier as Edwards rocketed from millionaire trial lawyer to U.S. senator to two-time White House hopeful.

When Edwards needed someone to scout locations for a Senate campaign office, he sent Young. When TV trucks converged on Edwards’ house in 2003 and damaged the neighbors’ lawns, Young was told to take care of it. When it came time to raise money for Edwards’ second run at the White House, Young was there to work the phones.

And when Edwards was confronted with the biggest crisis of his political career, Young was there again: After the National Enquirer reported that Edwards had an affair with a video producer, Young issued a statement in December saying that he — and not the candidate — was the father of the woman’s baby.

But given Young’s unswerving devotion to Edwards — and given Edwards’ lies in initially denying he cheated on his wife — some campaign watchers wonder whether Young, a 42-year-old married man, is taking the fall for his boss.

“Given the pattern of the thing, it’s not unreasonable for people to ask” whether the child belongs to Edwards, said Gary Pearce, a longtime Democratic operative in North Carolina and a consultant to Edwards’ 1998 Senate bid. “The media and a large chunk of the public, including some of John’s supporters, still question whether he’s told the whole truth.”

Around the same time that Young put out a terse statement through his lawyer in which he claimed to be the baby’s father, Edwards’ former mistress, Rielle Hunter, issued her own statement saying the same thing.

Then, only weeks before the first vote of the 2008 presidential election season took place in Iowa, Young abruptly left the Edwards campaign and his $90,000-a-year job as a fundraiser, and dropped out of sight. He packed up and left North Carolina for California in a move bankrolled by Edwards’ national fundraiser.

In his confessional interview Aug. 8 with ABC, Edwards insisted he could not have fathered Hunter’s daughter, born at the end of February, because the affair ended in 2006, though he added he would be “happy to take a paternity test and would love to see it happen.” But Hunter ruled out such a test the next day.

Young, like Hunter, has gone into seclusion, and he has not returned messages in months. Calls this week to attorneys who represented him in the past were not returned.

In the meantime, editorial writers and others have raised the possibility that Young is covering for his boss and that Edwards has not come clean.

On a radio talk show on Wednesday, Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said of Edwards: “I feel sorry for his family, because how horrible. But also, don’t you think he is the father of the child?”

Young has had brushes with the law that most recently included a driving-while-impaired arrest in 2006. But Democrats in Raleigh remember him as a loyal and resolute member of the Edwards team as early as Edwards’ upset victory for the Senate in 1998.

They described Young as a personal assistant who was involved in close family details, such as ensuring that Edwards’ parents’ hotel arrangements were taken care of at the 2004 Democratic convention.

“Anybody who’s been around campaigns knows that folks come and go,” said Joyce Fitzpatrick, a public relations executive who worked with Young to hold a pair of Edwards fundraisers. “Andrew was a constant.” Fitzpatrick described Young as a “very young, bright guy who seemed very devoted” to both Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth.

When Young was in his 20s, he was charged with passing worthless checks, possession of marijuana, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Charges of burglary and criminal mischief were thrown out in a Florida court in 1987.

Back in his native North Carolina a decade later, Young worked for the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, where he was registered to work as a lobbyist at the Legislature in 1999.

“I would only have positive things to say about him as being a helpful, friendly and pleasant co-worker to a new employee,” former fellow lobbyist Stella Boswell wrote in an e-mail.

In 1999, Young married Cheri Lynn Pfister, a 25-year-old nurse at the time.

“They appeared to be a nice happy couple,” said Carolyn Grissom, who purchased their home in Raleigh in early 2007. “They seemed to be crazy about each other. They certainly are crazy about their kids and dog.”

Cheri Young had a short moment in the spotlight in 2006, when she and her sister were in the audience during a taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and the star gave them $1,000 and instructions to make someone’s life better. Young used to money to seek donations from others, eventually raising more than $35,000 for needy families in North Carolina.

“We all have our ups and we all have our downs, and when you’re up, you reach out, and when you’re down, you allow others to help,” she said on Winfrey’s Web site.

That same year, Young was back in trouble with the law. He was cited in August 2006 for having open beer containers at a park near his home and, the next month, charged with driving while impaired. A substance abuse counselor later wrote that he had “found some evidence of alcohol abuse,” according to court records. Young was supposed to begin group counseling three days later. It was not clear from the records whether he completed the counseling.

Earlier this year, he was sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation and 24 hours of community service for the DWI. Court papers said he was living in California for work-related purposes. His attorney in that case did not return several calls.

Fred Baron, Edwards’ national finance chairman and a wealthy Dallas-based trial attorney, has acknowledged he quietly sent money to Hunter and to Young’s family to resettle in California.

Baron said he did so on his own, to “help two friends and former colleagues rebuild their lives when harassment by supermarket tabloids made it impossible for them to move forward on their own.”

John Edwards’ ex-mistress Rielle Hunter says she won’t have a paternity test conducted on her daughter – not now, not ever.

“Rielle is a private individual. She is not running for public office. She wishes to maintain her privacy and her daughter’s privacy,” her lawyer, Robert Gordon, said in a statement Saturday. “Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter’s privacy now or in the future.”

Edwards likely obliterated his political career Friday by admitting he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife, Elizabeth, with Hunter, a videographer on his presidential campaign. But he insists he could not have fathered Hunter’s 5-month-old daughter, Frances, because the “short” fling ended in 2006.

The North Carolina Democrat said he would be “happy” to take a paternity test – and according to ABC News, Hunter’s younger sister challenges him to do so.

A spokeswoman for the ex-senator declined to comment. Edwards publicly confessed to straying after being dogged by the National Enquirer for 10 months. The supermarket weekly first reported last fall that he had a love child with Hunter, a one-time Manhattan party girl.

Edwards initially denied those allegations. He copped to an affair 19 days after Enquirer reporters trailed him to a late-night meeting with Hunter at a Beverly Hills, Calif., hotel. Both Hunter and Andrew Young, the former Edwards staffer who claims to be the father of the little girl, were apparently hiding out yesterday.

A neighbor told the Daily News that Hunter moved into her posh Santa Barbara home, which overlooks the Pacific, in June, but hasn’t been seen in weeks. Hunter had few visitors and was “not very friendly” when approached, said the neighbor, who declined to give her name.

“It was very strange to me, a woman living in a house like that by herself, with just a baby,” she said. “I thought, ‘What is she hiding?’”

Former Edwards campaign finance chair Fred Baron on Friday said that – without Edwards’ knowledge – he had personally given Hunter and Young money to get out of North Carolina and away from reporters.

Yesterday, the Edwardses kept out of sight while a media army set up camp outside their 102-acre estate in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In an ABC “Nightline” interview Friday, Edwards said he agreed to see Hunter last month because “she was having some trouble” and he feared she might blab.

“I wanted her not to tell the public what had happened,” he said. “Very simple. That’s the reason I went.”

He said a friend of Hunter’s, Bob McGovern, called him to set up the meeting at the Beverly Hilton. It was there that National Enquirer reporters ambushed him the night of July 21 and reported on the rendezvous, raising new questions that ultimately forced him to confess.

This guy almost became presidend and had no problem lying to the public throught his campaign to cover it. That’s the issue, not that he had $ex, who cares about that, it the fact that he lied to the public for a whole year to cover up some indiscretion and he almost became our president.

Just an observation. Hunter is better looking than his wife. Hunter’s attractiveness is probably what got John hooked besides an affair is supposed to be exciting sex!
